Aged brass and polished brass are supplied unlacquered. There is no sealing coat, so the brass naturally gains a unique patina over time. Polished chrome, polished nickel, satin brass and powder coated black stay exactly as they arrive.

Straight from the box, polished brass is at its brightest. Aged brass arrives already darkened, so it starts where the others end up.

Rain, air and handling begin to soften the shine. Sheltered areas start to darken while the parts your hand touches stay brighter.

The surface deepens and develops natural variation, darker in the recesses and brighter where it is handled. No two knockers age alike, and a soft cloth and brass polish will bring the shine back whenever you want it.

Will an unlacquered brass bee door knocker tarnish?

Yes, and that is intended. Unlacquered brass has no protective coating, so it darkens as it reacts to air and rain. The change is uneven, because sheltered areas deepen faster than the spots your hand touches daily. If you prefer it bright, a soft cloth and any proprietary metal polish will bring it back in a few minutes.

Which bumble bee door knocker finish suits my front door?
